Funding cuts and developing our archive

Two issues – one is that Government funding has been cut back for so called peripheral activities, such as support for out of school teaching/activities. This has considerably reduced our income, and means we are having to review and cut back on our activities and running costs.

Secondly, capacity to develop our archiving. As people now begin to know about us, archives are being offered and although we carefully evaluate the relevance to our story before accepting, we are very concious of the responsibility to look after records once we take them into the care of the Trust and the time it takes to record and keep the records up to date.

A third point.  After attending a CyMAL workshop (Museum support organisation in Wales), we had been offered on loan an important portrait which needs quite a bit of restoration. The advice at the workshop was to point out to `lenders` that the cost of restoration, insurance, heating etc. would mean that we would need to ask for an annual fee towards these costs. The reply from the family was to donate the portrait to the Trust. Problem solved apart from the fact we still need to find £5,500 for its restoration!
