The Bob Watson Archive is the archive for the Stephen Joseph Theatre, Scarborough. It also contains a substantive archive relating to the playwright Alan Ayckbourn.

The collection holds material from 1955 (when the company was formed as Scarborough’s Library Theatre) through to the present day and primarily consists of: prompt scripts, manuscripts, programmes, posters, production photographs, reviews and press cuttings. A limited selection of production and design material is also archived but, due to space restrictions, is not a key feature.

The Ayckbourn Archive within the collection contains material pertaining to the world premieres of Alan Ayckbourn’s plays at the Stephen Joseph Theatre, which Alan Ayckbourn joined in 1957, was Artistic Director from 1972 and 2009 and is currently Director Emeritus of. There are prompt scripts for his world premieres from the mid ’70s to the present, a complete collection of play scripts, poster, photographs, press cuttings and programmes for all his premieres and revivals at the SJT.

In 2018, an archive exhibition space was added to highlight the collection and the work of the archive. The current honorary archivist is Simon Murgatroyd, who is Alan Ayckbourn’s Archivist.
