20th Century Vox: Bolton
Bolton, Lancashire
This was a two year project organised by volunteers from a range of community groups. It produced a social history of Bolton in the 20th century. There is a fascinating booklet, "100 years in Worktown", which reveals through words and pictures the lives of the weavers and other workers. Read about Gordon, who literally had to feight [fight] for his job, Hilda, who ended up delivering trade union speeches to 900 people at a time, and Dorothy, working in the card-room from 14, who warns that if you got wed, you got sacked!
The main activity of the project was oral history with some video and photography. It resulted in the following:
exhibitions;
a local history booklet;
a community drama;
a local radio documentary;
an education pack;
a website;
a CD-ROM.
The overall aim was to provide a community resource of educational and historical value for contemporary and future generations.
