Newcastle Photo Archive (formerly known as West Newcastle Picture History Collection) was created in 1984 to collect and maintain an archive of images illustrating the history and heritage of west Newcastle upon Tyne.
The collection is maintained by volunteers and contains over 21,000 images, plus maps, booklets and newspaper cuttings. It covers the present day suburbs of Arthurs Hill, Bells Close, Benwell, Blakelaw, Blucher, Callerton, Coxlodge, Cowgate, Denton Burn, Elswick, Fawdon, Fenham, Kenton, Lemington, Newbiggin Hall, Newburn, North Walbottle, Scotswood, Spital Tongues, Summerhill, Throckley, West denton, Westerhope and Whorlton.
Material is also held concerning coal mines, Vicker Armstrong and the Western ByPass.
It is based in the West End Service Centre & Library, Condercum Road, Benwell, Newcastle upon Tyne, NE4 9JH and volunteers attend between 10am and 4pm each Monday.
