Saddleworth Historical Society was established in 1966 with key aims to:-

  • document the history of Saddleworth,
  • promote an interest in the area’s past, and to
  • facilitate historical research.

The Society’s interest and activities are wide and varied and encompass studies into prehistory and archaeology, landscape and settlement, family history, the domestic textile industry, the industrial revolution and its impact of the growth of the Saddleworth villages in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

The Society has an extensive Archives of Saddleworth material. It includes books and published articles, maps, photographs as well as original documents.
