Mass Observation Communites Online Project (MOCO)

Moco Project

The Mass Observation Communities Online Project (MOCO) is a JISC funded partnership project between the Mass Observation Archive and the Centre for Community Engagement at the University of Sussex.

The project is working with community groups all over the country looking to extend and develop their own archives through using Mass Observation techniques. Through the MOCOproject.org.uk website, historical Mass Observation Archive material is made available online for the first time outside of higher education institutions, open for all to enjoy.

Through simple methods such as diary writing and photography, community groups are encouraged to document their working and everyday lives. Submission is simple through the MOCO website. These contributions (diary entries, questionnaire replies, photos, videos and observational tasks) will be displayed on the website, donated to the Mass Observation Archive and shared with the community organization so that they can develop their own archive.

The project is aiming to provide a valuable teaching tool for individuals, groups and institutions that want to expand their knowledge of historical, and current, Mass Observation and its techniques. The project serves as an inspirational resource for community organisations looking for ways to develop and expand their own histories and archives.

The archive is currently waiting for submissions and invites all interested community groups to contact us!
