Coalville Heritage

In 1982 a group of people formed a committee with the intention of celebrating the 150th anniversary of Coalville in 1983. The founder member of the group was local historian Denis Baker and the group was called ‘Coalville 150 Group’, Denis becoming the Chairman.

By the beginning of 1983 most local organisations were onboard including Leicestershire County Council and North West Leicestershire District Council.

The celebrations lasted for a week and included a large exhibition at the then Technical College and various event throughout the town.

After the success of the celebrations it was decided to continue with the 150 Group and through the years they organised exhibitions as well as publishing several books on the heritage and history of the area. Denis Baker’s book ‘Coalville – The First 75 Years’ is the definitive work on the early history of the town.
