Bowburn History & Heritage Room

Bowburn, Durham

Our room in the local Community Centre contains collections of books, photographs, maps and various kinds of documents and memorabilia.

The focus of the collection is above all on the history of Bowburn and its surrounding area but includes much from the wider region. It focuses mainly on the 20th century and also, inevitably, on coal mining. (The latest colliery in the village, which effectively brought that village into existence, began to be sunk in 1906 and closed in 1967.)
All items were donated by members and other local residents, past and present. They are available for public inspection and research at regular opening times or by appointment.

Since 2023, we have been re-cataloguing our collection and work to digitise more of it, not least our many hundreds of photographs, is ongoing.
