The RAF Halton Archive team maintain collections of documents or ‘records’ which have been selected for permanent preservation because of their value as evidence or as a source of historical or other research.
Trenchard ex apprentice records covering the period 1922 to 1993 are also held by the archive as well as photographic evidence. These record the setting up of No 1 School of Technical Training as well as the history of the 3 year apprenticeship scheme which was only open to male candidates between 15 and 17½ years of age at entry.
Halton was without doubt one of the best known names in the RAF and the workshops and schools were the seedbed from which literally thousands of skilled ground engineering staff originated. Of the 39000 youngsters who passed through the School over 6000 would be commissioned as officers in the RAF and a total of 136 achieved air rank (air commodore to Marshal of the RAF).
The aim of the Archive is to ensure that the RAF Halton story endures and enriches future generations. We believe that the archive can provide learning opportunities for people of all ages and when they need support to engage effectively we are prepared to meet the learning experience by providing exhibitions, publications, catalogues, enquiry advice sessions supported by talks and tours.
