www.SloughHistoryOnline.org.uk is an online collection of interesting stories and characters from Slough's past, over a thousand photos of Slough past and present, and copies of the Slough, Eton & Windsor Observer dated between 1883 and 1929.
The collection primarily concerns the Borough of Slough, Berkshire (formally Buckinghamshire), though our photographic material also include the towns surrounding Slough, such as Eton, Datchet and Stoke Poges. The Slough Observer also contains local stories from Windsor and Maidenhead, as well as some towns and villages further afield.
Our photograph material comes mainly from the Local Studies Collection of Slough Library, though we warmly accept material from other sources. We also have volunteers who are photographing today's interesting buildings for future generations.
Users can search for names in the Slough Observer's births, marriages and deaths columns and browse through the other pages. Our volunteers are currently indexing local articles from the newspapers and by the beginning of 2009, users could search for names and subject in the 19th century newspapers.
We also collect written history. Users are asked to place memories of Slough past and present on our "your story" pages and we invite all researchers who use Slough Library's Local Studies Collection to give us a pdf version of their work for www.SloughHistoryOnline.org.uk. We also add material researched by staff at Slough Library.
The newspapers and photographs on the site are reasonably high quality jpg files, while Slough Library keeps the original tif versions of the images for preservation purposes. Original scans are always made at 600 dpi.
