Culturenet Cymru is seeking help from residents of Powys, past and present in their quest to identify the sitters in a selection of portrait photographs from the first half of the 20th century. This fascinating project is a collaboration between Culturenet Cymru, the Radnorshire museum and the Radnorshire branch of the Powys Family History Society.
The portraits project came into being when Lloyd Lewis, a member of the Powys Family History Society, approached Radnorshire Museum with an offer to digitise 2000 of the museum's glass negatives. The portraits featured in this project came from a photographic studio known as 'Rousham Roberts' based in Llandrindod Wells. The photographs cover the period roughly between 1890 - 1950.
As digitisation of the portraits progressed it became evident that very little information about the sitters was available and only 10% could be positively identified. For this reason an appeal to the residents of Powys is being made.
Culturenet Cymru would like anyone who is living or has lived in Powys to visit the site and examine the portraits. By logging onto the website at www.communitiescymru.com visitors can send names or any other information about the faces they may recognise for use on the website.
