Manchester High School for Girls was founded in 1874 "to provide for Manchester's daughters what has been provided without stint for Manchester's sons. "

The Manchester High School archive contains records of all kinds dating from the foundation of the school to the present day.

In 2002, the Heritage Lottery Fund awarded a grant to the archive to help to conserve and promote the country's heritage in the field of girls' education.
