Howden's Transport Heritage Weekend

Following the success of its first event in 2006, Howden Heritage Weekend group in the East Riding is organising a full programme of events for this September under the theme of Howdenshire’s Transport Heritage. This market town and its surrounding area has an intriguing history of transport connections by air, water, land and rail and the weekend will give opportunities to visit and find out more.

“Howdenshire has played an important role in communications, not just in Yorkshire but in national and international arenas.” said Avory Brown, event coordinator. “The Hasholme Boat was discovered a few miles away and the R100 Airship was developed just north of the town.  Howden was an important centre, crossing point and staging post for centuries, with Howden Horse Fair one of the most important fairs in Europe. There were even two railway stations and the early high speed trains were tested locally.”

The event is free to the public and will be open from 1 – 5 pm on Saturday and Sunday, 8 – 9 September. It will highlight transport features and attractions in the area, with a variety of tours, exhibitions in the Shire Hall by local and specialist transport groups, regional rallies and other unusual events to attract visitors from far afield. It aims not only to fascinate the local, family or transport historian, but also entertain families and children.
