Grass Roots Theatre Group

Soldiers in rehearsal

An important community project for Grass Roots was in 2004, when the group staged a play, "Time & Chance", based on the industrial history of the area and the effects on local people of changing from an agrarian to industrial way of life.

The play was researched and written by the group and focused on the construction of the Barnsley Canal and its impact on people living in the Cawthorne basin. It also explored the effect upong the community when steam powered engines were introduced. The project involved 150 volunteer performers, musicians and crew and was staged in Cannon Hall Park.

Although this project is now over, there is still a link to the video which was produced, which looks at the lives of ordinary Yorkshire people at the end of  the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries.
