New Digital Archive of Slave Trade Commemorations

‘Remembering Slavery & Abolition’ is a digital archive of records from UK projects which in 2007 commemorated the bicentenary of the abolition of the British transatlantic slave trade following the Abolition Act of 1807. The archive will be launched by the University of Hull in 2017. Alongside material from the many exhibitions, performances, festivals, church services, workshops, community initiatives and other events that took place in 2007, the freely accessible digital resource will include educational materials exploring representations of slavery and abolition.

We are looking for input and help from community archives and heritage groups around the UK. Did you organise an event to remember slavery and abolition in 2007? Do you have surviving materials you would be happy to contribute to the archive? Please contact Dr Mary Wills at the University of Hull for more information: m.wills@hull.ac.uk

‘Remembering Slavery & Abolition’ is one part of a wider project, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council, which seeks to identify lessons and legacies of the antislavery past: please see www.usablepast.ac.uk
