Canvey Community Archive launched

The latest Community Archive Group to join the growing movement came officially into being on 12 April when the Canvey Community Archive was launched at the Library on Canvey Island in Essex.

In fact the launch represents the culmination of a first very active phase. The group was formed in 2006 in partnership with Essex County Council Libraries, The Essex Record Office, East of England Museums, and the Museums, Libraries and Archives Council. It is run by the people of Canvey.

The Canvey Community Archive takes the form of an internet site http://www.canveyisland.org/  so that its content will be available from home computers and, on the People’s Network, in Libraries around Essex.

The Group will gather memories as well as copying photographs and other documents that relate to the history of Canvey Island which sits in the Thames Estuary. Canvey residents are being asked to share their memories and photographs of life on the island.

The partner organisations hope that this will be a model which will be followed by other communities in and around Essex.
